“The Hollow”
That was the athlete’s sanctuary!…I remember having relay at recess and running the anchor leg against Charles Young…we were only in elementary school at Fair Street…I remember the gym and not being able to shoot a layup…I would lay it up too hard…back to “The Hollow”…we played Newtown and other community teams in there…tadpoles were “to the left!” We played baseball, and this is where I first played with Mr. Frank Ferrell…we had plenty of good games and fights after the games up there in”The Hollow”…remember the “peevines”…an automatic “homerun” because no one could find the ball. I remember Clara Bailey beating up Star-lee Ramsey or I thought she did!…never seen a girl fight a boy like that!… All my life I wanted to be a TIGER and play sports for our school. We used to wear the school colors…”maroon and white” shoe strings in our tennis shoes…I remember “Out the Road” playing against the “Projects”…the first time “PEDO, Anthony Cheeks” wanted to play, and he got hit one day, and his helmet would swing around his whole head, blocking his face…boy did we laugh, but he was like a “Little RUDY”..just had to play with us “Big Boys”…“The Hollow” was our training ground … away from our own communities… sorta a neutral site for competition and those God-forsaken fights…we may have to ask for forgiveness some day for those times…
