How about that 1957 Championship?
Tigers Fans. As you may recall Phil Jackson wrote about the 1957 championship game in an article that was posted in the Times on December 22nd, 1957. Phil touted the Tigers Players Gene Carrithers, Arthur Moss, Clarence Niles, David Camp, John Keith, William Johnson, Ellis Cantrell, Cecil Young, Clifford Stephens, and Coach E.L. Cabbell.
Phil was also impressed with the outstanding play of some of the Douglas High Lions players from Thomasville, Ga. One player, in particular, caught my attention: the quarterback Thomasville, Charlie Ward. Well, I was curious and looked into it a little deeper. Charlie Ward is the father of the 1993 Heisman Trophy winner from Florida State, Charlie Ward Jr. As you know, Charlie Jr. went on to play in the NBA before retiring a few years ago. I was able to speak with Charlie Jr. to confirm that it was indeed his father that quarterbacked the Thomasville team that the Tigers defeated for the 1957 championship; small world!!
